Mayoral Debates Today
by: David

Please join us Thursday, October 16, Kealakehe High School, 6 p.m., for a moderated mayoral candidate forum between Angel Pilago and Billy Kenoi.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with the award-winning culinary class from Kealakehe High selling lasagna (both vegetarian and regular) as a fund raiser to go to state and national competitions. Not mandatory, but if you plan to eat please let the Kona Kohala Chamber know at 329-1758. The students have promised to have ample supplies of lasagna. They will also sell water.

The forum will air live on LAVA 105.3 FM islandwide and also online www.lava105.com from 6 pm til 7:30 for those who cannot attend in person.

Following our debate, there will be a discussion of one ballot issue, whether to have or not have a Constitutional Convention starting at 7:35 pm. The forum is pau at 8 p.m. As a reminder, the forum organizers (Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, Kona, Outdoor Circle, PATH, Kona Board of Realtors, Hawaii Island Board of Realtors) request no campaign signs at the forum. However, feel free to wear campaign attire.

You may direct questions about the forum to our campaign office or to Kona-Kohala Chamber at 329-1758 or email sherryb@lava105.com.

Judging by their websites...
by: Anonymous

So I guess it is down, finally, to two mayoral candidates. Well...So here I go...looking up their websites...Judging by looks, I would definitely vote for K. Angel Pilago. I am in no way endorsed by him or know him personally, but his website is well structured, "respectable", presentable, and family oriented. On angel's website, you can clearly see that he has good islander support...
And you see a picture of him and his wife!

Now, on the other hand, Billy Kenoi just looks like someone who is going to do nothing but party while he is mayor...All his website shows is him standing in between two underage girls while campaigning...
"When I am mayor, I, Billy Kenoi, am going to pound some high-school b*tches!

He is clearly channeling the trashy politician that...does things that we don't want to think about.

Kenoi is Kim...
by: Anonymous

He will do harm to the Island in the same way as Kim did.
Kenoi is being sponsored by developers and realtors who give no thoughts about the environment but see only their short term profit.

Kenoi step down!

Jasper Moore/ Angel Pilago
by: Anonymous

I personally would like to see Jasper Moore take the mayoral spot. He seems to stand for a lot of things I believe in as well. I am also interested in Angel Pilago, who had the courage to stand up for the people's right to vote on the Cannabis Lowest Law Enforcement Priority. He did not say "let them all be drug users", he said, in effect, "let them decide for themselves". That is a victory for the local democratic process, no matter what the people decide.

campaign expenditures
by: Anonymous

As far as the Mayor race goes I was astounded to find that Kenoi and Inouye have been taking donations to their campaign from off island interests. Kenoi got numerous donations of $4000.

On the other hand Pilago has not taken any contribution over a $100 dollars from anyone.

I know who I am voting for.

Jo Kim - Liar Extraordinaire
by: Anonymous

Jo Kim took out an ad in the 9/9/2008 Tribune Herald where a claim is made that somehow the C-17 military flyovers were stopped due to her actions!

What a joke.

Please, if honesty & transparency in government is important to you, vote for ANYBODY but Jo Kim. She has ruined numerous lives on this island with her greedy, vicious, and false attacks --- don't let her use this race to advance her selfish power-hungry agenda.

homeless
by: steve

while in hilo a few weeks ago i noticed the homeless camps along the shore.....to me this is a crime that we first of all have this many homeless...many or most of hawaiian ancestry...in a state that has lands(good land) set aside for hawaiian peoples and administered on their behalf by both public and private trusts, it is completely unacceptable that we tolerate the mismanagement of this resource.... the people and the land have so much to contribute to our society that we allow it to waste away......second....using public parks to "house" our homeless population does a great disservice to all .....those with homes and those without.....there should be no reason that there is waiting lists decades long for homestead and housing for our native peoples

Angel and Nita Pilago's message to their supporters
by: Karen

Aloha mai kakou

Angel and I would like to thank you for your support and dedication to make our Hawai'i nei the best she can be. We will continue to campaign hard and spread the message of hope to all the people that we meet.

We are nearing our goal to be the first mayoral candidate to apply for Public Funding. We have not taken any donations from developers or special interest. Therefore, we feel we are bound only to the voice and the will of the people.

We are striving for Clean Campaigns and soon, with your help, we will achieve our goal.

Mahalo for your goodwill and belief,
Nita & Angel Pilago

** STATE SENATOR DISTRICT 3 **
by: David

Well the race for this spot is going to be tight, and it will be decided in the primary, as both candidates are democrats.

Both have experience with the job, as Green is the current senator, and Isbell is the former.

My vote goes to Green hands down however. This is the only candidate I endorse at this point.

I have watched his work, and have not seen any problems with him in his last term, and furthermore he will listen to any citizen that raises a concern.

This post was inspired by a recent phone call from Dr. Josh Green. He randomly called me, never having met or spoken to me before, and asked me if there was anything in particular that I thought that he could do better or be concerned about.

We talked for a little bit, and I told him of a couple issues that were important to me. In talking story he told me that he had called 15,000 people in his district to do the same thing, ask their opinions.

I told him I would put a post here, and a link to his website, joshgreen.org.

He took it one step further, he gave me his cell phone number to post here.

808-937-0991

He said everybody should feel free to contact him.

It gave me a good feeling that he was so committed to representing our interests that he would do that.

Hence the reason for this post.

Do You Want A Change??
by: Sammy

Having been to two political forums on the West Side, I can see why most people would want a change,,,but what way? There are few candidates (incumbents and ones seeking office) that are looking reality in the face.
Most all have wonderful ideas but the question is where is the $ coming from? In this time of downturn, the coffers are not going to be overflowing.

You have to have growth to support the community and supply jobs for the young people here. Do you want your children moving off the Island because of no work and no place to live. There can be a balance between growth and keeping the Island a great place to live.Private business supplies these and adds money to the County coffers. Quit making life so difficult for the small business owner.Keep the families of Hawaii together!!

I myself would not vote for any of the incumbents because of their stand on drugs and allowing the marijuana idea being placed on the ballot with half the signatures being illegal. Marijuana is just the starting point!! What do you think this will bring from the Mainland? You're right, DRUG DEALERS!! Make it another San Francisco, killings being an everyday occurrence.

One more sore spot is the cost of power here. With 40% of our power being from renewable resources, we need someone willing to take on Helco.

Think I'll quit for now and see if anyone else out there has some ideas along these lines!!

Something Good about a Candidate
by:

We do have an excellent candidate in Lorraine Inouye. One asks what has she done for us lately. Her website has detail, please take a look at it. As Senator, here are some things: TRAFFIC: Funding for Saddle Road improvements to link East and West Hawai'i, widening of Queen Kaahumanu Highway, the Kawaihae Road bypass from Waimea to Kawaihae, Keaau Bypass Road, Keaau-Pahoa shoulder lane conversion, The Mohouli and Puainako extensions, Kealakehe Parkway Extension, Akoni Pule Highway realignment and widening, Volcano Highway improvements, Hawai'i Belt Road rockfall prevention and drainage improvements, replacement of the Kawailii Bridge on Hawai'i Belt Road. Sen. Inouye also has fought for and obtained funding for affordable housing, agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, healthcare, eduation, charter schools, environmental sustainability, geothermal, $327 million in funding for capital improvements for the Big Island. Her achievements and connections, both nationally and locally, will serve our Island well.

I don't want to vote for any of them!
by: no good candidates

I find the selection of Mayoral candidates to be pretty disappointing. You have old time politicians like Lorraine Inouye, who knows the political system pretty well but what has she done for us lately? And Billy Kenoi, who everyone likes, has an interesting police record. Yes, we all did things in our past that we're not proud of, but are we all running for Mayor? So, can anyone tell me something good about any of the Mayoral candidates?

The Economy
by: David

Felt kind of funny posting this blog with no comments on it, so I will start it off. The biggest issue that the Big Island is facing today in my mind, is the economy. Lots of the candidates for Mayor talk about infrastructure and planning, but the only stand out in my mind for creative ways in dealing with a slumping economy on an island reliant upon the tourist dollar, is Jasper Moore. He seems to have some creative ideas about how to diversify our economy so we can deal with the hard times ahead. For more info on Jasper check out his website at citizens4moore.com It is good to see some new ways of thinking about the Big Islands economy being brought into the limelight.
