Big Island Events: Sharing Astronomy with Kupuna October 30th, 2008 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM W. M. Keck Observatory Headquarters, Hualalai Learning Theater in Waimea
The W. M. Keck Observatory and Subaru Telescope will host a series of interactive gatherings and informal talks with Hawaiian cultural practitioners and Hawaii-based astronomers. The Sharing Astronomy with Kupuna Program was created for community elders and the general public in response to a growing interest in Hawaii astronomy.
The program will take place at Keck Observatory headquarters in Waimea and at the Subaru Telescope headquarters in Hilo. Invited guests from the community will share information about Hawaiian heritage as it relates to astronomy, celestial navigation and wayfinding. Keck astronomers will also present highlights of recent breakthrough discoveries about the universe as well as the latest technical innovations in astronomy research. The Waimea program will occur Thursday evenings September 25, October 30, and November 20, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 in the Keck Observatory’s Hualalai Learning Theater.
The first half of the session will include presentations. The last half will be for more general questions and discussion. There is no charge for the program, and light refreshments will be served courtesy of KTA Super Stores. Seating is limited. The mission of the W. M. Keck Observatory is to advance the frontiers of astronomy and share our discoveries to inspire the imagination of all. Throughout the year Keck sponsors astronomy lectures, podcasts, and engaging science activities for students young and old.
The Observatory’s E-magazine, Cosmic Matters is published quarterly and includes multimedia feature articles showcasing Keck discoveries and achievements to a subscriber list of 2,300 astronomy professionals and enthusiasts. All staff members at Keck are encouraged to contribute up to 2% of their work time to community projects serving education, outreach and workforce development.
