Earth Patriot Hip Hop Dance Competition Entry Deadline Deadline December 31, 2008
Hip hop dance teams are cordially invited to enter the Earth Patriot Hip Hop Dance Competition in celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This competition is presented by Performing and Fine Artists for World Peace and Amnesty International.
Hip Hop Dance Competition Entry Information
Rules and Requirements:
1. Contestants must be students from the island of Hawai`i ages 12-18.
2. Teams must consist of 3 to 7 students.
3. Teams must choreograph their own hip hop dance routines.
4. Dance routines must be between 2 to 4 minutes in length.
5. Teams must prepare 2 dance routines for January 17, 2009, 1 routine for the first round of finals which will consist of up to 12 teams, and 1 routine for the second round of finals which will consist of the 3 top scoring teams.
6. Teams must choose 2 hip hop songs for their 2 dance routines from a CD provided by the sponsors of the dance competition. Selections will include music by the Hawai`i Island music group Kumanu as well other ‘conscious rap’ music artists.
7. This competition is an alcohol and drug free event. Students entering this competition will be representing their school or youth organization and should be role models in living a positive and healthy lifestyle free of drugs and alcohol.
Judging Criteria:
Each school, youth organization or dance studio will select one first place team.
Names of the dancers on the winning team must be sent to the organizers by January 5, 2009.
Final judging will be held at the Palace Theater in Hilo on January 17, 2009

Judging is based on four categories:
1. Dance ability
2. Choreography
3. Interpretation of the song’s themes
4. Presentation (costumes, synchronicity, stage presence, etc.)
Timetable
* September 2008: Information sent to Schools, Youth Organizations and Dance Studios.
* December 2008: Preliminary Judging by Schools, Youth Organizations and Dance Studios.
* January 17, 2009 Competition at the Palace Theater: Final Judging.
(Judges will be representatives of the music and dance community on the island of Hawai`i.)
Schools and youth organizations on the island of Hawai`i will receive human rights materials from Amnesty International. They will also receive the recording See the Flame by the group Kumanu that was produced to support the work of Amnesty International and commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Competition for finals at the Palace Theater on January 17, 2009 is limited to the first 12 teams that register. Teams can represent schools, youth organizations or dance studios on the island of Hawai`i.
Prizes include music CDs and gift certificates from businesses in Hawai`i.
