Never gave it much thought...

by M. Grafius
(Florida USA)

I have never given Hawaii much thought. For all my life, Hawaii has been a part of the United States. That's just the way it is.

That is until I was doing some painting for this amusing legless Irish man in a senior citizen's home.

While I was painting, he was watching an old black and white film about the seizing of Hawaii. I have no idea what the movie was and I'm sure much of it was over dramatized for the film. However, what I heard that afternoon was chilling. Here we have a proud, independent nation that was basically stolen from it's citizens.

I will admit that I still don't know that much about the whole affair. What I do know leads me to believe that you were robbed. Your nation was stolen from you. Your queen at the time literally had no choice but to acquiesce or watch her people and her nation be decimated by American troops.

Fortunately for you there is a solution should you choose to take it. Now that you're a member of the United States, you are constitutionally permitted to secede from the Union. What's better is that you don't need Federal approval to do so.

From what I see you have the financial resources to make it as an independent nation.

The following isn't meant as a threat. Just something to consider. If you do decide to take this route you will be giving up any protection afforded you by being part of the Union. I don't see this as a major issue though. Your geographic location helps greatly with protecting your borders.

Why so difficult?
by: Anonymous

I've been reading about some of the difficulties you've been facing with this movement. What I'm wondering is this.

Why is this so difficult?

Hold a vote amongst Hawaiian citizens. Topics to be voted on are simple. Maintain status quo, claim sovereignty or secede.

Once the votes are in simply tally them up and see what the Hawaiian people want. Then your elected officials file the appropriate paperwork and be done with it.

From what I see, sovereignty and seceding are already guaranteed you by the Constitution.

As shaky as the current political and economic environment are currently, I doubt the federal government would be willing to take measures to "block" it. They're not allowed to use the military against you as long as you are a member of the Union. I seriously doubt they would dare after the fact or risk extremely negative views from the rest of the world. We're already being called an "empirical nation".
Heck, you'd be hailed as heroes the world over for standing up for your rights.

You'd be giving up the protection afforded by the American military, but I'm sure your leaders could strike accords with other nations to help with this.

I have no vested interest in this cause. I'm about as far away from Hawaii as you can get and still be in the US. I've never been, nor plan to go to Hawaii. I just hate to see American (for the time being ;) ) citizens being bullied about by the government that is supposed to serve them.
