I have lived on Oahu and graduated from Chaminade University with an MBA in management. I love Hawaii, the culture and the people. I also own real estate on the Big Island and travel back to Hawaii frequently.
I can truly understand the desire true Hawaiians have for recognition and sovereignty. That being said, "Be careful what you wish for".
Sovereignty will create great economic, political and social chaos for Hawaii. That giant sucking sound will be all of the U.S. dollars heading back to the mainland. Most from the mainland believe sovereignty means that the Hawaiians want total independence and want to give up statehood. As a result, mainland residents will demand an immediate withdrawal of all financial, educational and economic support. Hawaii will be thrust into third world economic status with high unemployment and poverty.
International investment in Hawaii will disappear. The risk of investment will be too high. I personally will sell my real estate holdings and withdraw all financial support from the college I graduated from. Real estate investors will panic and pull out of Hawaii for fear their land may be taken, the economic costs of doing business in Hawaii will skyrocket and tourism will evaporate.
I hope I'm wrong. I hope a compromise can be reached. You can't have your cake and eat it too. To me sovereignty is an all or nothing deal. If you hate being an American so much, we will take our money, education, jobs, welfare programs, technology, health care, funding and tourism back to the mainland.
I love Hawaii and its people. Unfortunately the spirit of Aloha has turned into a hatred for Caucasians. I had hoped to retire and spend my last days on earth in Hawaii. I hope I can still have the opportunity to do so someday.
Aloha and good luck.
