Below are five Merrie Monarch Videos that show the different phases of the competition portion of the festival. First we will tell you a little about each category of the competition. There are five categories.
The First Style in the videos below is the Wahine (Womens) Kahiko Style. This is a video from the 2006 Merrie Monarch Festival.
Kahiko is the ancient or traditional style of Hula. No musical instruments, except for the drums and gourds which set the rhythm. Ornaments and outfits are traditional style also.
The next video is of Kane Kahiko Hula from 1994. These were the first pace winners of the competition.
The video is a little rough, but the performance is outstanding.
The third video is of the Wahine Auana competition. Auana is contemporary Hula. A lot of resorts on the Big Island showcase this style.
Musical instruments are involved, and the outfits are modernized. So are the ornaments.
Leis involve Flowers that are more recently introduced.
The Fourth Video is the Kane (Mens) Auana competition.
This is a short video, but you can clearly see the difference in the styles.
The Fifth Video is of the winner of the Mrs Aloha Hula Kahiko 2003.
There are two divisions to this competition, Kahiko and Auana. The solo competition is very intense, as all the attention is on the one Wahine.
