Big Island Fishing Story: BEGINNER'S LUCK

by ERNEST KALANI ALVAREZ~TORRES
(KAMUELA, HAWAII)

DEAR, HANA PA'A

ON MEMORIAL DAY ME, MY WIFE & TWO KID' S PACKED UP OUR FISHING GEAR AND HEADED TO MAHUKONA. WE FISHED ALL DAY WITH HARDLY ANY ACTION. OUR SON (KALANI) WHO IS 7 YEARS OLD CASTED OUT HIS POLE WITH 6LBS TEST WITH A FLOATER AND TWO SIZE 18 HOOKS WITH AHI AS BAIT, THEN PLACED HIS POLE IN THE SIDE HOLDERS OF OUR FORD TRUCK. IT THEN SAT THERE FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS UNTIL WE HEARD IT SCREAM. MY SON FOUGHT THE FISH FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES THEN WE SCOOPED IT UP AND WE WERE AMAZED. HE CAUGHT A BIG MU! IT BROKE THE LINE OF THE FIRST HOOK, BUT IT WAS THE SECOND HOOK DAT CAUGHT EM ON THE LIP. THIS IS THE FIRST BIG FISH MY SON CAUGHT AND HE CAN'T WAIT TO HIT THE OCEAN AGAIN! MAHALO!!
