Visiting the Volcano, Big Island

Hi. I am staying on Oahu right now. I would like to come to the Big Island and visit the volcano. There are a lot of offers for guided tours and stuff. What is the best and cheapest way to visit the volcano? Should I just fly over there? Or should I take a tour?
Any suggestions? Mahalo.

Answer: It may be cheaper to take a helicopter from Maui, and a lot quicker. However, If you want to come over and take a spin, it may be a little bit more expensive. I'd say call the heli co. Over in Maui and compare that price to, flying here, renting a car, renting room & board.
